Laser Cutting Safety Protection

Application of Safety Light Curtains in Laser Cutting

I. Overview

Laser cutting technology, with its features of high precision, high speed, and high flexibility, has been widely adopted in numerous industries such as metal processing, automotive manufacturing, and aerospace. However, the laser cutting process poses numerous safety hazards—for instance, laser beams can cause severe damage to human eyes and skin, and the high-speed movement of the cutting head may also result in mechanical injuries to operators. As an advanced safety protection device, safety light curtains can provide operators of laser cutting equipment with reliable safety protection, effectively reducing the likelihood of safety accidents.

II. Laser Cutting Work Scenarios and Risks

Laser cutting equipment mainly consists of components such as a laser generator, a cutting head, and a worktable. During operation, the laser generator produces a high-energy laser beam, which is focused by the cutting head and directed onto the surface of the workpiece, causing the material to melt and vaporize rapidly, thereby achieving the cutting objective. In this process, the following major risks exist:

1. Laser Radiation Risk Laser beams have high energy and excellent focusing capability. If a worker’s body part inadvertently enters the laser cutting area, the laser beam could directly shine onto the human body, causing irreversible damage to the eyes and skin.

2. Mechanical Motion Risk The cutting head moves and positions itself at high speed on the worktable. During operation, if an operator approaches or comes into contact with moving parts, they could be struck or pinched by the cutting head.

III. Installation and Working Principle of Safety Light Curtains

(1) Installation Location

Safety light curtains are typically installed around the hazardous areas of laser cutting equipment, such as the edges of the worktable and both sides of the cutting head’s movement path. Depending on the specific structure and operational requirements of the laser cutting equipment, an appropriate installation method can be selected—such as horizontal, vertical, or inclined installation—to ensure that the safety light curtain provides comprehensive coverage of the laser cutting equipment’s hazardous areas.

(2) Working Principle A safety light curtain consists of two main components: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter emits a series of parallel infrared beams, forming a light screen. The receiver detects these beams and converts them into electrical signals. When no object blocks the beams, the receiver can normally receive all the beam signals, indicating that the safety light curtain is operating properly and the laser cutting equipment can run as usual.

Once an object—such as an operator’s hand or body—enters the detection area of the safety light curtain, some of the infrared beams will be blocked, and the receiver will no longer receive the corresponding beam signals. Upon detecting this beam blockage, the safety light curtain immediately transmits a signal to the control system of the laser cutting equipment.

(3) Resume normal operations

When the operator leaves the detection area of the safety light curtain, the infrared beam resumes normal transmission, and the receiver once again receives the complete beam signal. The safety light curtain then feeds this signal back to the laser cutting control system. After the control system confirms that the danger has been eliminated, the operator can press the reset button on the operation control panel to resume normal operation of the cutting machine and continue the cutting process.

IV. The Core Challenges of Laser Cutting Safety Protection

1. High-energy beam risk:

The laser cutting machine’s output power can reach 6kW Above, human exposure 0.1 Instantly causes III First-degree burn;

Traditional physical barriers hinder the efficiency of material loading and unloading, and frequent starts and stops reduce equipment utilization.

2. Complex operational condition interference:

Cutting fumes and metal spatter can cause optical sensors to trigger falsely (industry average false alarm rate >). 3 Next / Class)

High-reflectivity materials (such as mirror-polished stainless steel) reflect stray light, which can interfere with detection accuracy.

3. Compliance Pressure:
