Application of Safety Light Curtains in Laser Cutting
1. Overview
Laser cutting technology, with its high precision, high speed, and high flexibility, has been widely used in many industries such as metal processing, automotive manufacturing, and aerospace. However, there are many safety hazards during the laser cutting process, such as the laser beam potentially causing serious damage to the eyes and skin, and the high-speed movement of the cutting head possibly causing mechanical injuries to operators. Safety light curtains, as an advanced safety protection device, can provide reliable safety assurance for operators of laser cutting equipment and effectively reduce the probability of safety accidents.

2. Laser Cutting Work Scenarios and Risks
Laser cutting equipment mainly consists of a laser generator, cutting head, workbench, and other parts. During operation, the laser generator produces a high-energy laser beam, which is focused by the cutting head onto the surface of the workpiece, causing the workpiece to rapidly melt and vaporize, thus achieving the cutting purpose. In this process, the main risks include:
1. Laser Radiation Risk The laser beam has high energy and high focus. If any part of the operator's body accidentally enters the laser cutting area, the laser beam may directly irradiate the human body, causing irreversible damage to the eyes and skin.
2. Mechanical Movement Risk The cutting head moves and positions at high speed on the workbench. If the operator approaches or touches the moving parts during equipment operation, they may be struck or pinched by the cutting head.

3. Installation and Working Principle of Safety Light Curtains
(1) Installation Location
Safety light curtains are usually installed around the hazardous areas of laser cutting equipment, such as the edges of the workbench and both sides of the cutting head's movement path. Depending on the specific structure and working requirements of the laser cutting equipment, appropriate installation methods can be chosen, such as horizontal, vertical, or inclined installation, to ensure the safety light curtain fully covers the hazardous areas of laser cutting.
(2) Working Principle The safety light curtain consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter emits a series of parallel infrared beams, forming a light curtain. The receiver receives these beams and converts them into electrical signals. When no object blocks the beams, the receiver can normally receive all beam signals, and the safety light curtain is in normal working condition, allowing the laser cutting equipment to operate normally.
Once an object (such as the operator's hand or body) enters the detection area of the safety light curtain, some infrared beams will be blocked, and the receiver cannot receive the corresponding beam signals. Upon detecting this beam blockage, the safety light curtain immediately transmits a signal to the control system of the laser cutting equipment.
(3) Resuming Normal Operation
When the operator leaves the detection area of the safety light curtain, the infrared beams resume normal transmission, and the receiver again receives the complete beam signals. The safety light curtain feeds this signal back to the laser cutting control system. After confirming the danger is removed, the operator can press the reset button on the control panel to restore the cutting machine to normal operation and continue cutting work.
4. Core Challenges in Laser Cutting Safety Protection
1. High-Energy Beam Risk:
The output power of laser cutting machines can reach 6kW or above, human exposure 0.1 seconds can cause III degree burns;
Traditional physical protective barriers affect material loading and unloading efficiency, and frequent start-stop reduces equipment utilization;
2. Complex Working Conditions Interference:
Cutting smoke and metal splatter cause optical sensors to false trigger (industry average false alarm rate > 3 times / per shift)
Highly reflective materials (such as mirror-finish stainless steel) reflect stray light, interfering with detection accuracy.
3. Compliance Pressure:
EU Machinery Directive ( 2006/42/EC ) requires laser equipment to meet PL e or SIL 3 level protection;
5. ENT Advantages of Safety Light Curtains in Laser Cutting Machines
(1) High Sensitivity
ENT Safety light curtains can quickly and accurately detect the entry of small objects. Even small parts like the operator's fingers entering the hazardous area can promptly trigger the safety protection mechanism, effectively preventing safety accidents.
(2) Complete Certification
As the first domestic light curtain to simultaneously pass Cat.4、 PL e 、 Type 4 、 SIL 3 level certification, the product possesses industry-leading safety performance. Certification Standards 。

6. Summary
Redefining the safety boundary of laser cutting.
